Pledge: Biden Administration Must End U.S. Funding of Israeli Apartheid

Washington DC: President Trump may be still contesting the election results, but JVP Action is readying for the new administration, with a pledge launched yesterday rallying JVP Action supporters to keep the pressure on President-Elect Joe Biden to pursue real justice in Palestine/Israel.

The Hinenu Pledge, (Hinenu is Hebrew for “we are here,” a biblical affirmation of commitment), states: “We will organize and fight with everything we have to demand that the Biden administration end the U.S. funding of Israeli apartheid and pursue real justice in Palestine/Israel.”

Honoring the broad coalition that helped defeat Donald Trump – including Palestinian Americans, progressive Jewish Americans and the massive and rapidly growing number of progressive voters who want an end to the U.S.’s disastrous foreign policy in Palestine/Israel – the Hinenu Pledge calls for accountability from Biden.

“Even as we celebrate all we’ve accomplished, we also pledge to keep up the fight. The call for justice for Palestinians is bound up with the call of those fighting for a better, fairer, more sustainable world where equality and dignity are accorded to all people – no exceptions. We’ve defeated Trump – and we are ready to keep fighting.”

Stefanie Fox, Executive Director, Jewish Voice for Peace Action

Fox added: “Throughout history, in the face of fascists from Nazi-occupied Europe to Charlottesville, Jews have stood up for ourselves and stood with others targeted by racist violence. We have said: WE ARE HERE. We are with our neighbors. And we are not going anywhere.”

The past four years witnessed devastating injustice for Palestinians, and the progressive movement knows that Trump was just the deadly tip of a very deep iceberg. When it comes to denying Palestinian rights, humanity and freedom, Trump’s policies built on years of precedent from both sides of the aisle.

The U.S. government sends $3.8 billion in military funding to Israel annually and has refused to hold Israel accountable for how it uses these funds. U.S. tax dollars pay for the suffocation of Palestinian families living under Israel’s military blockade of Gaza, the Israeli military’s abusive arrest and detention of children across the occupied West Bank, devastating and cruel home demolitions, extrajudicial killings, and the separate and unequal system of oppression against Palestinians living as citizens inside of Israel.

Biden has played a key role in U.S. complicity, and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris has pledged her support for the continuation of this unconditional funding.

“Our movements insist on real change. As Jews and allies, we will organize with everything we have to demand that the Biden administration support justice, starting with an end to the U.S. government’s funding of the Israeli military.”
