DNC Platform plank on Palestine/Israel endorses complicity and cowardice

“The progressive wing of the Democratic party will no longer allow Palestinian rights to be ignored.

The DNC Platform Committee’s vote to proceed with an Israel/Palestine plank that ignores Palestinian rights is reprehensible. Poll after poll shows that Democratic voters are increasingly critical of Israel’s violations of Palestinian rights and willing to see U.S. military funding leveraged in defense of Palestinian human rights. The DNC Platform is wildly out of touch with the Democratic base.

Jewish Voice for Peace Action believes that Democrats should be working toward a future in which all Palestinians and Israelis live in full equality by upholding a foreign policy that centers human rights, dignity and justice for all Palestinians and Israelis. At a time when the Israeli government has boldly stated its intent to formally annex parts of the occupied West Bank, in flagrant violation of international law, the DNC has chosen a path of complicity and cowardice.

Stefanie Fox, Executive Director of Jewish Voice for Peace Action: “The progressive wing of the Democratic party will no longer allow Palestinian rights to be ignored. The majority of Democrats support conditioning U.S. aid to the Israeli military in defense of Palestinian human rights, and social justice movements across the country have embraced the call for Palestinian freedom. It is past time for the Democrats to catch up with their base.”

Estee Chandler, Chair of JVP Action Board: “As a longtime Democrat and DNC activist, I’m dismayed that the DNC is yet again ignoring the key intersectional issue of Palestinian human rights. But I also know that the rising tide of progressive Democratic voters won’t be silenced. The DNC ignores their multigenerational progressive base at its own peril.”

Beth Miller, Government Affairs Manager for Jewish Voice for Peace Action: “The DNC platform committee just voted to ignore Israel’s violent, illegal military occupation and to continue sending $3.8 billion in U.S. tax dollars every year to fund Israel’s apartheid rule over Palestinians. But even if the Democratic establishment isn’t ready to embrace Palestinian rights, the intergenerational, multiracial movement of Palestinians, Jews, and allies within the Democratic base will continue to grow and keep pushing for Palestinian rights, dignity and freedom.”
